The History of St. Anne Catholic School

The roots of Catholic school education go deep into South Carolina soil. St. Anne Catholic School was founded in 1954 by the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy and continues an extensive tradition of more than 135 years of Catholic education in Sumter, South Carolina. The Civil War forced the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy to move from Charleston to Sumter. In the 1860's the Sisters founded St. Joseph Academy, Sumter’s first educational institution to serve the needs of the students. Parents were billed $2.00 per month for the education of each child and students came from as far away as Georgia and North Carolina. Since 1990 St. Anne Catholic School has been staffed completely by lay personnel. In 1997 grades 6-8 resumed their pre-1987 status after spending several years as part of the Sumter Catholic High School campus. The following year the school received both Diocese of Charleston and the South Carolina Independent Schools Association accreditation.
